There is a controversy about ADD vs ADHD.
ADD vs ADHD. What do we call it? I hear in media and on TV people call it ADHD. Everyone I know calls it ADD. But when I read ADHDaction.com it's called ADHD.
Don't worry, I have the answer. These are all different names for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The name has evolved over time as more research and real life experience has been gathered on the disorder.
What is the ADD ADHD difference?
All people have some symptoms of ADHD at one time or another. Those of us with ADHD have them severe enough that they are a disability. Each case of ADHD is different and some of us show inattention the most. Others are more hyper. So they came up with a name to cover all of it.
ADD is the old term and ADHD is the most current term. ADD is the term that everyone learned in the 80’s and it stuck. There is no problem using it, it is just a little outdated. When the doctors got together to make an ADHD Definition they made up three different subtypes. - ADD inattentive type
- ADD hyperactive type
- ADD combined type
That was a lot of words to get mixed up for one general condition. Most recently they changed the definition to ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD is one name that covered all three different types. It makes it easier to talk about the condition in general.
The bottom line on the difference between ADD and ADHD.
Medical terms are complicated. The best thing to do is KISS (Keep it simple ......). Call it ADD if you like, if you want to use the current term, then call it ADHD.
Great! Now that that is settled you can focus your energy the real important stuff, ADHD treatment.
