ADHD Adults and Organization. It's Simple!
ADHD Adults who get organized are the ones in control of their ADHD. Take the simple steps that I took to get organized and you will have way less to get distracted by.
I get distracted by almost anything. That leads me to start things and forget about them. Then I start something else that I won’t finish. Eventually I have some many unfinished things piling up. The snowball grows and I never get anything done. Good news is that I have found a simple and effective way to stop this piling up of things. Getting organized in a way that works for me keeps me from being distracted. This is one of the simplest tools I use to fight ADHD. And any ADHD adults can do it too.
I give everything I own a home.
In order to reduce clutter I give everything a home. That way I just put things away without thinking. There is no need to decide where something should go. It already has a place. The first step was to make a list of all the things that I use in and around my desk. This was easy, all I had to do was take the stuff on and in my desk and put it all into a pile. It was fun and messy. I took it all out and dumped it in a big pile in the middle of the room. I then sorted out similar things. Stuff like mail and bills went in one pile. Tools and scissors went in one pile, Paper and office supplies in its own.
Eventually I had everything sorted. The key step was this. Once it was sorted I made a place for each of these different types of things. Once I had the spot I simply put it there and didn’t have to think about it. Some things like books needed more space while pens could easily share a draw with other office supplies. Now, every time I have something lost on my desk I will pick it up and put it in the place I predetermined it to belong. No thinking. I just do it.
It was the thinking of where to stuff all this junk that slowed me down. Since everything has a home I don’t think and I don’t get distracted by it. I just put it away and move on to more important things.
If it needs doing it sits in plain view.
If I have a project to complete then I leave it right on my desk. Staring at me. When it is sitting there in the way that makes it easy to remember to complete the task.It becomes an inconvenience and I just complete what is needed to be done and move on. I also don’t let more than one thing get in the way at a time. That way I don’t forget to finish things before I start on other stuff. This works for me. See how it works for you.
When my desk is clear I feel good.
This works as a reward for me. I like the cleared off look of an empty desk. It is a goal and a reward all at the same time. That is the trick, if there is one. You need to make the need for an uncluttered workspace a reward. The reward keeps you from getting more distracted which is the real goal. Plus it feels good at the same time.
