A talk about ADHD and Education that is very entertaining and with important points. This talk touched and changed my life.
The stories all point to tapping into the strengths of children and growing them as talents. Look after the video for highlights.
3:05 "Creativity is as important as literacy."
3:46 "This little girl never paid attention. But in the drawing lesson she did."
5:27 "Kids will take a chance. If they don't know they will have a go. They aren't afraid of being wrong."
6:57 "Shakespeare was in somebody's english class."
12:03 "Many highly talented, brilliant people. Think they are not. Because the thing they were good at in school wasn't valued or was actually stigmatized." Like people with ADHD.
13:05 We think in diverse ways.
15:14 The story of Gillian Lynne
15:33 "She was hopeless at school." What they might now call ADHD.
16:49 "Gillian isn't sick. She's a dancer." Take her to a dance school.
17:01 Where she found "People who were like me. People who had to move to think."
17:31 "Somebody else put might have her on medication and told her to calm down."
18:51 "Seeing our creative capacities for the richness they are. Seeing our children for the hope that they are."
The story of Gillian Lynne made me Cry.
The similarities between her and I are astounding. I, like many of us didn't fit in to the regular classroom.
I have become torn by the success that she had while I was "put her on medication and told her to calm down."
Often times I wonder what I could have been?
I then think of all that I can do now. Yes I got the rough end of the stick but I have taken that and turned it around. I can now speak with experience and I try to help others to avoid what happened to me at a young age.
The energy and positivity that this talk about ADHD and education has is undeniable. It is these qualities that I strive for. I try to get this point across with articles like Famous People With ADHD and ADHD and Entrepreneurs another amazing TED talk.
Those of use with the symptoms of ADHD can turn them into tools for success!
