ADHD Holistic Medicine can Help with the ADHD Challenge

by Erin
(Toronto)

Holistic medicine is based on principles of Holism, where therapies treat not only the physical, but also mental, emotional, social, environmental and spiritual health. For children and parents living with ADHD, support is essential in all these facets of life.

There are various kinds of holistic therapies, with different philosophies and treatment techniques. One of those is Naturopathic Medicine, a specialized and regulated healthcare profession comprised of Naturopathic Doctors or NDs. Naturopathic Medicine is a complete, individualized and coordinated approach to health care, integrating modern advances in science with traditional and natural forms of medicine. It is the art and science of disease diagnosis, treatment and prevention using natural therapies including nutrition, botanical medicine, homeopathy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, physical medicine and lifestyle counseling.

Natural therapies aim to treat the cause of illness, rather than simply providing symptom relief. A practitioner can treat the child by exploring all elements of health, and addressing possible stessors to the body that may contribute to symptoms experienced by the child, such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. These stressors can include emotional stress, food allergies, bacterial, viral or fungal infections, nervous system irritants, and diet.

Dietary guidance and support, and nutrient therapy are fundamental, as nutrient deficiencies are common. Certain stimulant drugs commonly used in the treatment of ADHD not only suppress appetite but also reduce nutrient intake and growth.

There are herbal medicines that have been shown to be useful for anxiety, poor appetite, tantrums, and hyperactivity. There are also herbs that can improve poor concentration and attention span.

Another way that holistic medicine can be helpful is by supporting the parent. Living with ADHD is certainly challenging, and self-care is very important for parents. Stress management techniques and effective coping skills would ensure parents maintain a healthy energy levels to be able to keep up with your little ones!

There are so many ways that holistic medicine can help you and your family. Be sure to do your research in advance about the kind of practitioner that might be most useful for you.
