The Power of ADHD in Adults

What I learned about ADHD in Adults in the work place is this.
The onus was on me and not my boss. I am the one with ADHD.
That means I am the one who can either control my ADHD or let it control me.

Yes I do think and work differently. But as an adult I realized that if I want to work or keep a job. Then I needed to adjust how I thought to make it work.
ADHD is my problem.

By asking the boss to accommodated me I was making my ADHD his problem. I was shifting the responsibility for it to him when it is my mine. My employer is busy with business and many other employees. All with unique issues, we all need to do the work.

In the end we are adults and we need to learn and adapt to life. We cannot expect the world to learn and adapt to us.

The ADHD Law Degree

There is a story about a law student with ADHD.

They asked the Bar examiners if they could write the bar exam with accordance for their ADHD. Having things like more time and a private room to write the test.

After some thought The Bar examiners replied.
Yes.
They said that you can write the ADHD Bar. If you pass then you can have an ADHD law license. You can open a law practice but you would need to let every client know that you practice law with ADHD. When you enter courtrooms you can ask the judges to conduct ADHD trials with accordance for your special needs. The student decided to write the exam just like everyone else.

They realized they needed to work harder. It became aparent that no person looking for a lawyer will want to work with one who couldn’t pass the Bar. No judge would change their courtroom for it either. I would not want my defense based on someone who couldn’t make the cut that everyone else made.
Would you?

The point of the story is that the onus is on the individual to make changes in their life and work on their weaknesses. The rest of the world will keep on going with or without them.

The adult ADHD was not preventing this person from success. It was the attitude that the world needs to change so that they can make it. The world moves on no matter what. It is not under our control.

It is our power.

The thing we can control is ourselves. We can work harder and get better. As adults with ADHD we can control and direct our lives. ADHD in Adults is not a disability to me. It is an opportunity and it is a strength. I have these special abilities just like famous people with ADHD. They have been successful and I can too!

ADHD in Adults presents us with challenges. These challenges are not impossible to overcome. We may need special help to control our ADHD. ADHD treatments like training, counseling, changes in lifestyle and even medication. These things are available, doable and very effective at conquering ADHD.

In the end we will still have to measure up just like everyone else,
And we can!
