There are so many reasons camp is great for kids. Lets think about some reasons specific to ADHD kids and what they go through in life. They have it tough sometimes and camp can really burst them out of their shells.Alienation
So often the ADHD child can feel alone with their problems. They can feel like no one understands them at all. I know I felt that way. My parents and teachers didn't understand even though they tried. My friends and siblings didn't know either. Having difficulties with friends, family and school they just knew I was different and often I was treated differently too. An ADHD camp can give you child friends who are going through the same problems. What is even better is they will be around camp leaders who know and understand your child's special needs. Dedicated, talented people who have been trained to work with ADHD and other children with behavioral difficulties. Belonging and Confidence
Being in a place like this will give you child a feeling of belonging. This feeling will allow them to grow and develop confidence that they might not have had. Having the support of friends and other people makes us all stronger. Relationships form us and change us in the most powerful ways. If I had the chance to go to a camp where I truly felt I fit in. It would have changed my life. People from all walks of life who have been to camp scream about how it changed their lives. The life-long friendships they made. The good times and laughter that they shared then and still share till this day. Giving Back
I didn't have a chance to go to an ADHD summer camp when I was young but I have learned some valuable lessons being a camp counselor as I got older. I learned the power of giving back, of contribution. I learned how to deal with some many of my problems and I wanted to tell others how to too! I was a skateboard camp counselor and I am constantly surrounded by young skateboarders. I remember how much I looked up to those older than me. So everyday when I am with these kids I lead by example. I try to show them how to act. Whether it is avoiding that fight with a bully or picking up litter around the skatepark. These little things add up.
Differences that last a Lifetime!
Many kids who went to camp when they were young go to camp to be a counselor. They send their kids to camp too. The experience was so fun and rich that they can't help but keep going.
