I was a kid with ADHD
I still have Adult ADHD!

I was told I have ADHD at 6 years old, 25 years later I have Adult ADHD. I still deal with the symptoms of ADHD to this day.

My problems with inattention and impulsiveness and hyperactivity are less severe now due to increased self-control and maturity. But they are still there.

I often interrupt others when talking and lose focus when on projects. I start with a plan. As I get into the work to tend to forget the goals I set. My brain goes mushy and I lose focus. I start to feel stressed and overwhelmed.
Thoughts start creeping into my head like: I can't concentrate I have to take a break to clear my head or I don't know what to do next.

In a situation like this I will often stop what I am doing to clear my head. The problem is that I usually go and start something else before I come back to the first thing. This happens over and over creating unfinished projects piling up everywhere.

I have found ways to keep from getting into this cycle. I use diet and exercise to get focused. I have developed ways to keep organized so that projects don't pile up. Everything in my home has its place. When I am done with something I put it away, if I am not done I leave it out in the open. That way if I have an unfinished project I see and have to clean it up. It helps me to remember and take the time to get it done.

The Power of an Adult with ADHD.

You are your own solution!
Unlike children, adults have the ability to treat their own ADHD. They are the one who can make needed changes in their lives.

How you say?
Let’s get started.

The signs of ADHD show up in all of the different situations adult life brings. Do any of these Adult ADHD situations sound like you?

  • I can’t focus and get my work done and it is affecting my job.
  • My home is filled with unfinished projects and unorganized belongings.
  • I am unable to find enough time for my family and friends.
  • I can’t keep up with my bills. I always seem to forget about the payments.
  • I struggle to finish my assignments. I will never get through school.

If you're an adult that feels like I described, what do you do?

Acknowledge

Try asking these questions about your Adult ADHD:
Do I really have Adult ADHD?
What could a diagnosis do for me?
Who can I get to diagnose me?
Could a diagnosis help me find treatment?
Can I find treatment on my own?
Have I made myself aware of the treatments available to me?

If you can answer all of these questions and feel that a diagnosis of ADHD is needed to get you the treatment you need. The next step is to talk your family doctor.

Talking with Your Doctor

When you talk with your doctor, tell them that you think you may have Adult ADHD and it's affecting your life negatively. Make sure they know that you feel it is something real and that you need help to solve it.

Show that you have researched adult ADHD and feel that a diagnosis will help you receive treatment. Show your doctor that you have looked into this disorder. That you have spent the time in research and understanding. You are serious about putting in effort. That effort will carry though into success with your ADHD symptoms.

Your doctor can help you find specialists in your area that can diagnose Adult ADHD. It is rare that your family doctor will be able to do a diagnosis for you. You need an expert in the field. Ask for contact information and make the appointment as soon as you can.The sooner you get tested the sooner you can really get down to treatment.

If you can’t get a diagnosis don’t worry.

Getting the peace of mind that comes with a diagnosis can be very helpful. It can put you at ease and relieve so much of the blame in your life. You still need to do the work to improve your life.
