The causes of ADHD explained...
There is a large amount of speculation as to the causes of ADHD. This is because there is no physical marker or test that can prove the you have it. I bring up the most common topics, and then mention a theory of my own.
The biological causes of ADHD aren't really known. Many people have conducted studies attempting to pinpoint the specific differences in the brain of people with an ADHD diagnosis and everybody else. Some point to the frontal lobe, while others point to the part of the brain that connects to left and right sides, called the corpus callosum. Other studies focus on areas deeper inside the brain. No study has found anything special or different about an ADHD brain. If there is one, it will be front page news for sure.
The likely Causes of ADHD
Heredity If a child has an ADHD diagnosis it is likely that one or both of the parents will also have ADHD. Considerable evidence shows a link in the occurrence of ADHD symptoms between parents and their children. The symptoms of ADHD can make parent child relationships very difficult. A child with ADHD presents a challenge. That would be multiplied if the parents exhibits symptoms of ADHD. Think of how it would be to raise a child who is impulsive and hyperactive and can't pay attention. If at the same time you are acting on impulse not able to pay attention to the child. The ADHD symptoms would feed off each other to create real problems in a parent-child relationship.
Home Life A child may also exhibit symptoms of ADHD if their home life is disorganized, inadequate, chaotic, or even dangerous. Even the very adept child would have difficulty with the daily tasks of the school environment if they are constantly worried about their home life. It is important to have an experienced counselor or psychologist interview the child they can understand their greater environment. This is because you cannot outright ask a child if they think there's anything wrong with their life. A child in an abusive home knows nothing of the normalcy of a loving home. An expert can see these problems.
Early age Early school age children receive more ADHD diagnoses than any other group. Does this suggest that the symptoms of ADHD are triggered when they start school? Before school age not much attention is paid to how long a child is concentrating or what attention level they have. Once in a classroom setting the symptoms of ADHD really stand out. I think that ADHD symptoms are not noticed until a child enters a school setting. This is when a they required to sit still, follow instructions, and maintain focus. The perfect storm for symptoms of ADHD to shine through.
Intelligence The ADHD symptoms are common among children with IQ scores that don’t fit the norm. When students are in a classroom environment that does not suit their intellectual ability they struggle. If the subject matter is too complex or too simple for an individual symptoms of ADHD are made worse.
Medications Most medications for ADHD affect the chemicals in the brain which control signals in the brain the help us feel good, focus and remain calm. The assumption has been made that since there is a change in behaviour when these chemicals changed by medication. That they must be the causes of ADHD. This occurrence is interesting, but it does not constitute proof of the causes of ADHD. There are millions of chemical and electrical reactions happening in our brain every second. Most of which we don't understand. The chances that we hit the very to process that cause ADHD are pretty low. If we did there would be more scientific evidence to back the theory. We would have a biological test for ADHD.
Stress Stressful and threatening situations could be one of the causes of ADHD.The reactions are so similar. Many of the symptoms of ADHD come out when the body is stressed. Examples of this are hypothermia, heat stroke, lack of water and starvation. I'm not sure how this relates to the classroom or in daily life. I just found it to be an interesting correlation. I think we are placing ourselves into unnatural settings and our mind reacts in a similar way to that of its reaction to danger. We have not adapted to the surrounds of the modern world just yet. This may cause symptoms of ADHD.
A conclusion on the Causes of ADHD
While many studies of the brain are attempting to pinpoint a physical causes of ADHD. To date no conclusive evidence has been found. This leaves us with a big question mark on the subject.Lets not get to caught up in the causes. We must keep informed on the latest developments. Our energies will be much better spent on ADHD treatment. That is the key to controlling our ADHD symptoms and living our lives the best we can.
