Information on Cylert

This article is a general view of Cylert for comparison with other available ADHD medications. I have taken all of the information in the published medical manuals and text books and summarized it for your convince.
I am not a doctor. Talk to a one for any real advice.

After two years of taking Ritalin and I was growing and building a tolerance. This made it tough to keep me “properly medicated”. At every visit to the doctor they would change my dose. Sometimes I would take one long release, other days I would take a pill in the morning and then a pill at lunchtime. We even chopped pills in half and one point.

I still remember the terrible taste of the pill especially when half of it was chopped into little bits. Finally at one visit the doctor said let's try a new medication called Cylert. We had tried so many different things with Ritalin that I guess they decided why not?

Immediately after starting it I became a zombie. I'm not sure what the dosage was but it was enough to completely eliminate my personality. The drug's effects lasted long into the evenings. We had quite large windows on the south side of our house with huge trees in front. It was fall at this time and I remember this because I would sit and stare out at the branches for what seemed like hours at a time. The only way I can describe the sate i was in is being “high”.

My mother noticed these behaviors and was quite disturbed by them. As she realized that it this drug was not beneficial for me and had me switch back to Ritalin immediately.

There's no way for me really know the dose that I was taking because we don't have any records he was such a long time ago that they were all shredded.

I guess it was a good thing that I didn't continue on my medication Cylert. Not only because of the "high" affect had it on me. It was later discovered that there is a risk of severe liver damage using this medication, even at regular doses. I was lucky enough not to experience that.

This is my experience, others may have different levels of success.

General Information

Other names:
Cylert, Pemoline

Available in:
Tablets, chewable tablets.

Why it is prescribed:
Used to increase attention and decrease restlessness as a treatment for ADHD.

How it works:
The mode of therapeutic action in ADHD is not known. This drug is thought to allow the chemicals in our brain that make us feel good, to stay in action longer. When you take this drug it will clear your mind and lessen the symptoms of ADHD.

This drug affects systems in the body in a short term manner. The body will alter itself to accommodate the effects of this drug over time. These changes make the desired effects more potent. It takes several weeks for the drug to really kick in and work well. This also works in the reverse order. So it will take time to slowly wean a patient off the drug in order to discontinue use without withdrawal effects.

This is complicated, sometimes boring and very important to your safety and health. Speak with a doctor about it. They are the experts.
